Birthday Romp Postponed

Today's Kona's 4th birthday (or so I say since I don't know the date for certain).

I hoped to take Kona for a special romp--a long trail run into our higher forests. Unfortunately, during a game of "Lizzy" yesterday ("Lizzy" involves as much keep away of her stuffed lizard as it does fetch), Kona ended our session slinking away from me.

As some of you know, Kona becomes afraid of me when she's sick or hurt, so I knew she tweaked something. Usually she literally shakes off these tweaks and is ready to go again. That wasn't the case yesterday. I knew she wasn't well when we went back inside and she stood frozen, drooling by the window.

But don't worry. I don't think Kona's hurt badly. As an extremely sensitive dog, being physically uncomfortable can scare her. I know one of her front limbs is the culprit, but it's hard to tell which one or where the pain is coming from. I take that as 1)nothing is broken and 2)nothing is badly torn.

So we're hanging low for awhile. I'm trying to give Kona extra space while she's still nervous around me, which is hard, being that I want to squish the birthday pup in hugs. But I'll resist. There are plenty of birthday treats on the menu instead.

Happy Birthday Kona. I hope that you get to celebrate soon.

My K gets fearful when she's sick or hurt too. Our vet has learned to examine K very very closely when I tell her that K is acting fearful. Indeed, K's fearful behavior was a big part of why she looked super carefully and found K's bone tumor relatively early. I don't mean to suggest that there's something that serious going on with Kona - I'm just commiserating about how fearfulness often signals a physical problem in our pups.

I do hope that you get to go on your birthday hike soon, Kona.

Happy Birthday, Kona. Sorry that you can't get to go on your hike on your special day.

I know you've mentioner her fear-of-you-when-hurt before, but I wonder what the cause is. Does she think YOU caused the pain, or is she associating pain with some sort of medical treatment? Or is she just plain feeling vulnerable from being in pain? Very intriguing.

Happy Birthday Kona!

Have your Mom pick up some Arnica Montana from the health foods store (Whole Foods or Henry's carries them).

Get the pill type...don't worry, they dissolve in your mouth! The Hyland's brand dissolve quicker but taste kinda funny. There's another brand in a small blue vial that Mom likes better. Those are harder and don't dissolve as fast so she just crushes a few between two spoons and dumps it in my mouth.

Its a homeopathic remedy that helps with strains, sprains, sore muscles and bruising and works great! She can google it for more info.

hope you feel better soon!
